Commissioning a Painting
I was trained to paint from life with the model before
me and that is the best and my preferred way to work.
However through painting active children and busy adults
I've learned that this is not always possible. I have
developed a way to work from photographs in these cases
which yields excellent results. If possible I like to do
a quick head study in pastel. If you can, consider posing;
it
is an interesting experience- a chance to see how a painting grows.
I can meet and photograph clients in their homes, offices or at
my studio in Hamden, CT.
The commission process consists of three to four meetings.
In the initial meeting, which could be accomplished by
telephone or email, we will discuss the particulars
of your painting. For family and children's portraits I
will be interested in learning about the personalities and
interests of those I will be painting. For a professional
portrait I will need to know what image a client would like
to present or accomplishments to highlight. In all
my portraits the setting, pose, color, composition and size
will be chosen carefully to create the mood, image or effect
the client desires. I will discuss with you where the
painting will be hung and the color palette and style of
that setting so that the painting enhances the space.
Some photos may be taken at this time. A deposit will be
required at the time of the photo session.
If needed the second meeting will consist of a photo
session and creation of a color palette {color mixtures will be
mixed to match the colors of the subject's skin and hair}. A
color sketch or drawing could be done at this time.
At the third meeting the photos will be viewed and choices
finalized. I will have some compositional sketches to
choose from. A contract will be provided and signed.
Two-thirds to one half of the cost of the portrait will be due
at this time. Oil paintings will take approximately from one month
to three months.
During the fourth meeting you will be presented with the
final portrait. I guarantee a physical likeness in features
and expression. My clients are always very pleased with
their paintings. Recommendations from clients can be viewed at

I can discuss framing choices with you.
The final payment is due.
The size, number of figures and complexity of details and
background will affect the price of the portrait. Each
painting has its own price based on these variables.
Charcoal and pastel drawings start at $500.00. Feel free
to contact me, I will be glad to give you a specific price
based on the type of fine art you would be interested in
commissioning. I would also be willing to start the process, for
example if it is a child's portrait, to take photographs
in order to catch them at a particular age.
